If you have heard of the NDIS but are not sure what it is or how it works, you are not alone. At Caring4U, we understand the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) can seem confusing at first. That is why we have created this easy-to-read guide to help participants and families understand what the NDIS is all about, how it can help, and how to get started.
What Is NDIS?
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is an Australian Government program that funds support and services for eligible people with permanent and significant disabilities. It aims to help participants achieve their goals, increase independence, and participate more fully in the community.
Unlike older funding systems, the NDIS gives you choice and control over the supports you receive. You get to decide who provides your services and how your funding is used to meet your needs.
Who Is Eligible for NDIS?
To access the NDIS, you generally need to:
✅ Be aged under 65 when applying
✅ Be an Australian citizen, permanent resident, or Protected Special Category Visa holder
✅ Have a permanent and significant disability that affects your ability to take part in everyday activities
If you’re not sure if you’re eligible, Caring4U can help you understand the criteria and navigate the application process.
What is funded under NDIS?
The NDIS funds “reasonable and necessary” supports that relate to your disability and help you:
- Live more independently
- Increase social and community participation
- Achieve your personal goals
Examples of supports the NDIS can fund include:
- Daily personal activities (e.g. personal care, showering, dressing)
- Transport to community activities
- Therapeutic supports (e.g. physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy)
- Home modifications
- Nursing and clinical care
- Supported Independent Living (SIL)
- Assistive technology
How Does NDIS Work?
1️⃣ Access Request: You apply for the NDIS, submitting evidence of your disability.
2️⃣ Planning Meeting: If eligible, you meet with a planner to discuss your goals and needs.
3️⃣ NDIS Plan: You receive a plan outlining your funded supports.
4️⃣ Implementation: You choose your providers and start receiving services.
5️⃣ Review: Your plan is regularly reviewed to make sure it still meets your needs.
